Security and privacy
Sylas holds the documents, decisions, and conversations your company runs on. That takes a lot of trust, and we built Sylas around keeping it.
Your workspace is ordinary files on your own computer. The copy that keeps your team in sync is encrypted on its way to us, checked against permissions on every request, and never sold or used to train AI. Sylas makes money from paid plans, never from your data, so free workspaces get exactly the same protection.
-
We never sell your data
Sylas is paid for by the teams who use it, not by advertisers.
-
Never used to train AI
Not by us, and our AI providers’ terms don’t allow it either.
-
Leave with everything
Your workspace is ordinary files and folders you already have.
Where your data lives
Teams anywhere in the world use Sylas. Your files live on your own computers, and the shared copy your team syncs through is stored in our United States data region. A European Union region is on the way for teams that need their data kept in Europe.

AI and your data
Sylas uses AI to answer your questions and to make the changes you ask for. Before the AI reads anything, Sylas checks what the person asking is allowed to open, so it never surfaces a file they can’t see. It receives only what it needs for that request. Sylas keeps no copy once the answer is back.
Sylas never uses your data to train AI models, and we work with AI providers only under business terms that don’t allow them to train on what we send. When the AI changes a file, you review the exact change before it’s saved.
- No training on your data
- Permission-checked context
- Every change reviewed
Access and control
Our servers decide access each time someone opens, searches, or exports a file, so removing a person takes effect immediately. Inside a shared workspace, individual files can be kept to the people who need them.
Every published change is versioned and can be restored; drafts stay with the person writing them until they publish. Workspace admins have an activity log of sign-ins and permission changes that they can export. Logins for connected tools like Slack, Notion, and Linear stay in your computer’s keychain, and Sylas asks before it changes anything in them.
- File-level permissions
- Full version history
- Exportable activity log
Infrastructure and operations
All traffic to Sylas is encrypted in transit, and our sites accept only secure connections. Data is backed up twice a day, and every backup is encrypted before it’s stored. Every part of the service is checked once a minute, and our team is alerted as soon as something stops responding.
You sign in with Google or a one-time email code, so there are no Sylas passwords to steal. Sylas staff work through a separate, restricted system with its own accounts. Usage analytics are collected only with your consent, on infrastructure we run ourselves.
- TLS 1.2 and 1.3
- Encrypted backups twice daily
- Monitored every minute
Your data stays yours
Your workspace is ordinary files and folders, so it was never locked inside Sylas to begin with. Workspace owners can export every file at any time, and deleting your account removes your personal details and the workspaces you own.
- Plain files and folders
- Export anytime
- Delete anytime
